... who would be willing to help me out with a small piece of lathe work in exchange for beer, money or other trade?

I have a clarinet barrel made of cocobolo that needs the sockets lengthening/deepening, and maybe the central bore widening/smoothing. It's a few mm on each socket, and a fraction on the bore if needed. I can diagram what needs doing or photograph the barrel if that would help?

None of this is anything I have the equipment to do - my pillar drill and routers won't do! - but seems (to me) to be a fairly straightforward turning job. I'm based in Hessle, near Hull, but obviously willing to travel if anyone is willing to help. Also, any work done would be at my risk - so if the piece isn't up to it and breaks, that's my problem.

Waiting hopefully!

Noel,
My Daughter is into music in a big way this is in my experience a job for a specialist and not one I would recommend being undertaken by a craft turner contact a decent music shop they will have details or repair services that you can contact.

Jon - thanks, I didn't know of the register. I will give him a try if there are no other local offers.

Nick - I've been a semi-pro musician for over 20 years. If this were an expensive professional quality instrument then yes, I'd be looking at specialist instrument repairers. In this case, it's a set of cheap bits for me to play with - only I'm stumped by the shallowest tenon joints I've ever seen...

Cheap ebay clarinet, intended for use on rougher gigs where I don't want or need an expensive horn, but the barrel is too long, so it plays flat. Cue an even cheaper ebay barrel, which turns out to be cheap for a reason!
