...to hollowing box down the grain?

A newly sharpened bowl gouge doesn't want to know, the Hunter ring tool which laughs at Lignum Vitae just bounces.

I managed one small round bowl, (although I managed to go too deep and go through the screw chuck hole!!) and am now trying to make a square sided box interior. So far, the only tool that seems to make any progress is a parting tool mostly scraping the wood away!! :?

Advice or accept the box is er... quite hard actually.

Drill hole to depth required, (with spindle gouge , flute up - just shove it in, with drawing every whjile to clean )
use just a normal spindle gouge on a pull cut from centre, outwards, ( gouge flute at 7 oclock, cutting with lower edge.
remember grain direction, you need to go downhill to get a good cut !

When you feel up to it - try the Raffan Cut ! - Very clean finish off the tool with this one.

Thanks Loz,

It still fought back but cut much cleaner using that technique. The Raffan cut I can't manage on this lathe as there is insufficient height over the bed to get the angle. At the moment, I need the extension rest as well as the normal tool rest to get the height and the tool handle just keeps hitting the extension rest. Must get one made with a longer spigot as with the extension it tends to vibrate too much.

Just need to clean it up and I'm there - then do the lid!

__________You could try this method.
__________These images are from a deep vase WIP but I use the same process
__________for flat bottomed straight sided boxes.
__________I use forstener bits to open up to basic depth.
__________Use masking tape to mark drill depth on shank, allow for centre spur.
__________Open up the bore by working through the drill sizes.
__________Work drill in and out of bore to remove trapped shavings.

__________Now comes the dilemma if you don't have any specialist hollowing tools.
__________I use narrow but thick (stiff) scraper or for the deeper items a home made tool with a Ci1 tip.
__________Set the tool rest height (flat is good) so that the cutting corner is above centre and giving clearance for lower edge.
__________This ensures tool will naturally resist a dig in as well if you get a catch.
__________Plung cut, small cuts at a time, and with care flatten of bottom of hole.

Thanks Chas,

I need to get the tool rests sorted as I said to Loz. I do very little between centre turning and really don't need a long rest so one like the one in your pics seems sensible. I'll have to look in the bits box for what i can make up or get my friendly metalwork company to make one for me.

Oh its a box !

Well in that case, ignore my previous and google D-Tool. YOu could grind any rount stock you have as a D-Tool. I use this on boxes as it gives a good 90 degree to get into corners without catching.

Ill take a pic of mine if you like.

Well it worked fine anyway!!

Pic of the 'd' tool would be good thanks.

I use my Woodcut flexi-hollower to take most of the wood out then finish with a box scraper for the sides and flat scraper for the bottom.

Nice pair of jugs are they wooden?

If there is a secret, I think I missed it on this one!! Someone holed my piston!!
