Hi,

Complete novice here, I can hang pictures up, but now I've decided to upgrade to putting some shelves up in an alcove on our living room. :p

The dimensions are 875mm x 230mm and I've got 2 x 1 battens, and using 18mm thick furniture wood for the shelf. I've got 60mm countersunk screws and the brown rawlplugs, but I was wondering if these were ok to use, or would they be over-kill? Would I be ok with smaller screws and the red rawlplugs?

As you can see, I'm very new to this!

Hello, and welcome.
You have to have 3 posts before you can get any pics showing.
There are several questions that you need to answer,
Is you're shelf wall dry lined (plaster board stuck straight on the masonry)? or a solid plaster?
This will tell you the type of fixings you will need, as in a cavity fixing for the dry lining, or plugs, red, (4mm screws) or brown, ( 6mm screws).
A usual rule of thumb for screw length, is double up the thickness of the item being fixed, but in masonry, 60mm screw in the 6mm hole drilled TWO plug depths and I think is a better, and solid job.
That would be for 2"x 1" planed batten used for the shelf supports, if that's what you're thinking of.
I'm not familiar with furniture wood. Suggest you get more posts in and put some pics on HTH Regards Rodders
