Hi

I am getting these really annoying giggly adverts on the right of my screen when on UKworkshop, is this from the web site or is it my laptop? Any techies out there that can help?

Chris

lots of ads are generated by your browser, targeted specifically to you by analysing key words from your internet searching history :shock:
Ever thought that it was an amazing coincidence that an ad appears for something unusual when you were only looking for one the other day?
Try something like adblock for whichever browser you use
https://adblockplus.org/en/firefox

I get girls in bras and pants, want to swap?

Well I don't :D

Pete

Are you referring to the advertisment block down the side of the forum page?

If so as Nev says these adsense linked adverts are triggered/influenced by your browsing history and search history.

You may wish to clear all unwanted cookies from your system to reduce the history that is being harvested by the advert server.

I don't think adsense is working because at the moment I have "Weird trick trick to look younger", which I think involved putting tomatos on your eyes, "Weird Trick to kill teeth stains" and an advert for motor cycle clothing. I have not done any searching that might prompt this.

When you see an advert you may see a small > & possibly an X box in the top right corner of the Add.

Clicking the > will show you details of AdChoices system and how you can influence it.

If you select the X you should have the choice to block that Add in the future.
This is the script that displays in that panel.

Code:
						<script type="text/javascript"><!--
						google_ad_client = "ca-pub-*****************";
						/* UKW Forums - right col NEW */
						google_ad_slot = "**********";
						google_ad_width = 160;
						google_ad_height = 600;
						//-->
						</script>
						<script type="text/javascript"
						src="show_ads.js">
						</script>

It should also lead you to this configuration page.

It won't stop the adverts but it can influence those shown..
(suspect all choices may be wiped if you clear the cookies)

This intrusive advertising does throw up some funny oddities. I bought my sister some silly socks for Christmas from M&S. I was subsequently plagued by M&S adverts for socks ("No use now, I've bought 'em!") which then morphed into all sorts of other M&S products ("I don't need a bra. Got nowt to put in one!"). It's currently trying to sell me sofas. I haven't bought (or googled) sofas in about twenty years, and don't need any, so quite what it's thinking is beats me. It's a persistent little bu@@er, though. Worse than door-to-door salesmen wanting you to swap energy providers.

Oh that's depressing.
Just clicked on the 'choose your ads' button and based on what I look at, it think I'm 45-54 years old....... I'm only 30.

Is that google telling me I'm getting old before my time?

Am I correct in thinking that this site's hosting etc is funded by the inane ads? In which case a bit of inanity is a small price to pay.

I am using Chrome with Adblock, and I see no ads - that's kind of my point. On many free* sites (like this one) the running costs are derived from their ad sales. I like getting access for free*, so if it's a question of ignoring some tolerable ads to fund a site that I find worthwhile then I'm prepared to unblock this site. If however, this site is funded through the largesse of Mr Big, then I'm happy to carry on free-loading.

*Of course, there's no such thing as a free lunch, and if you can't work out what's being sold and to whom it's probably you, or at least your information trail, being sold to the advertisers.

Morning all

If you use SeaMonkey, Adblock Plus is available as an Add-On.

Cheers
