Hi, I'm looking for some advice on breakers (MCB) for a Crabtree SB6000 consumer unit.

I have moved up to a Maxi 1 lathe (1.5hp), and when I connect the power it trips the breaker. The lathe is new and I hope the fault does not lie there.

What type of breaker would you suggest? My suspicions are its the start up surge that is tripping the circuit. I understand that certain types of breaker can accommodate and designed for this initial surge.

If anyone can identify what type of breaker for the above consumer unit, and where I could source one I would be most grateful.

Kind regards

You need a type c breaker. I expect all yours will be marked Bxx where xx is the current rating.

The difficulty maybe finding one to fit. Manufacturers seem to change their CUs fairly regularly and the newer parts are not exchangeable.

Ebay is a good source and normally you have a picture to check. Look particularly for the position of the terminals screw on the bottom where it has to align with the tabs on the busbar.
You might find asking a local sparky who might just have an older one on the van or at least know which type fits which CU

Make sure you fit the same current rating otherwise you might overload the cables.
Edit:
It looks like those old Crabtree ones don't use the conventional type b /type c markings.
You need to find a sparky with specific old crabtree knowledge.
It possibly won't be easy to do what you want with your existing CU.
I've reverted to even older re-wirable fuses in my workshop to avoid this problem with my 1.5hp planer

Hi Myfordman Thanks for your reply, very kind.

On further investigation, when power is switched on it keeps tripping the earth trip on the RCCD (earth fault protection RCCB 30mA trip breaker ) . What this means is that there could be a earth leakage fault within my machine (or maybe I have a fault in my Consumer Unit).

I will have a electrician arriving on Wednesday, so he will be able to determine if I have any problems with my consumer unit. I may have to run a new line from the main incoming board and just have the lathe on a separate consumer unit.

I’ll talk to Record Power they have been very helpful on my other machine purchase.

Kind regards

Aden

Update.

Those good guys at Record Power informed me to remove the EMC filter on the inverter, that done no more earth leakage and no more CB popping.
