Now, I appreciate I am a noobie when it comes to spinning wood but I feel I am not an silly person, however, 4 months in to my new lathe with a swivel head and I have only just realised that you don't have to use the fixed points, you can lock it down at any point and turn wood. this is a revelation/swililation to me, why dont they print this on the front of the manual (which we never read). Now of course I am not bending over the bed for hollowing but simply turning it a few degrees towards me.

Every day is a school day they say, no more locking in to fixed points.

DOH

such revelations are always interesting - I will admit to one when reading the recent brass filial threads; simply hadn't put 2 and 2 together to realise HSS would work on softer metals like that. Now stored in the bleeding obvious part of brain for future use.
