Hi Guys. being one of the old school I still work in old money so when it comes to measuring in metres I get a bit confused. I have just moved and want to put carpet tiles down but can't work out how many I need. I want to do a small front entrance porch, which measures 1.3 x 1.3. this then goes into the front room, which measures 3.4 x 5 metres and this leads into a hall area with all the other rooms leading of from this. The hall area measures 2.2 x 1-9 metres. I am going to lay carpet tiles in all 3 areas as a continuous run and would like to know how many I need.

I have looked at loads of places to buy them and have settled for Amazon. The boxes of tiles contain 5.5 metres and are 500 x 500mm. Reduced from £115 per box to £59-95 so I thought this would be a good deal. Many thanks in advance.

Hiya Geoff

This may sound a bit long winded but it helps me out. First of all draw out the porch and hall and room on paper at 100mm = 1m, graph paper can be a good help. Then cut out tiles at 50mm square from card and place them over the drawing. It's common to work from the middle of a room outwards, either placing the centre of a whole tile or the centre of four tiles joining in the middle, not by starting placing whole tiles along an edge. Alternatively draw the spaces out and draw a grid of the tiles on top. Cutting them out helps you know if spare from one edge can be used along another edge.

I find if I work out the square area of the floor and divide into the packs of tiles I get confuzzled and end up with a gap somewhere (usually in the wallet).

Rounding up the sizes i think you will need approx 99 tiles in total.
1.5 x 1.5 = 9 tiles
3.5 x 5 = 70 tiles
2,5 x 2 = 20 tiles

There will of course be some waste but that is to be expected unless the areas to be covered have perfectly straight edges with no cut outs,
rounding up will increase the exact amount you need but its always better to play safe and have a few extra left over rather than run short and not be able to finish the job because you cant get any more from the supplier, it also allows the odd fopah to be made when cutting .Any spare go into the loft to use as replacements in the event of a accident ( pets/grand children/red wine to name but a few).

All other advice should be used as well coz my mafs aint wot it used to be #-o

Regards

Mark

Might be worth getting a quote from a carpet shop for supply and fit- we had a room done and were surprised how cheap it seemed for a decent carpet fitted.

Thanks Guys and You Nev. I will give Colin a ring a Monday. I am in Llandybie now, so much wetter than St Clears.

Hi Chippygeoff

Just to add to Mark.B's calculations, if you do decide DIY route, you will need 5 boxes (22 tiles per box will give you 110 tiles)

Regards Keith

22 tiles per box from those you mentioned. You'll need 5 boxes giving you 110 tiles and you should have about 10 spares, so, £300.
