Hi chaps!

I have seen some images online of some earring stands and I would like to make one (not for my personal use don't worry haha). I have actually seen one in person however I didn't really have much time to examine how it was made.

This is the sort of thing that I want to produce:

The bit I can't work out how to do is the actual drilling of the holes in order to hang the earrings. Now I have seen that a jig can be bought but they only seem to be available in America (unless I am missing something).

Does anyone have any solutions for the drilling issue?

Cheers

I would turn the cylinder to size and while on the lathe mark the centre and a ring on the face where you want the holes then divide and mark the hole centres and drill manually with a portable battery drill or dremel. you could draw (on a pc/ mac) and print a small template in paper or card to make life a little easier. then once drilled carry on as per project.

something like this....

Thanks for the quick replies guys!

Woody I think your idea is good however it is maybe a bit too high tech for my first attempt haha! Maybe if they go well then I would look into that route for batch production.

Nev I like the simplistic approach which is probably what I will end up doing!

I have seen some templates used which look interesting!

Did you just hand drill the holes or did you jig it?

hi adam
i have a couple of jigs somebody gave to me when i started turning that have been made on a metal lathe.
i have lent them to a friend at the moment so can't post a photo of them at the moment, but they are just a turned metal ring about 3 inch in dia. and 2.5 inch in dia.about 12 mm wide and about 5mm thick (sorry for mixing metric and imperial).
you just turn the wood to the appropriate dia. and place the jig onto it and mark off the hole positions or drill with the jig clamped in place - it makes for a very quick way to position the holes.
i will post a photo when i get them back.
cheers paul-c
