I've always found double boiled linseed is the best product. it's a little bit varnishy sort of. it's used to make burnt sand mastic apparently. I found a gallon on an old chicken farm and over several decades gradually used it. pointing around a door recently lo and behold the linseed provided was the same. it's a dark reddy brown.
