While car boot sales are the place to get cheap stuff in the UK, over here in NZ garage sales are the norm, most of them starting at 8am on a Saturday morning.

Last Saturday I picked up this drill for the princely sum of $5, about £2.50. There's no makers mark on it but does anyone know what make it might be?
It's pretty heavy, the main gear is a good 10cm across and it's two speed (which I've not seen in a hand drill before).

S for Stanley?

I'm not well up on Southern Hemisphere tools but drills like this were widely made in the early to middle C20. I'll see if I can find some catalogue pics later. US makers such as Millers Falls made loads of models with only tiny differences, many of which were copied or nearly copied elsewhere.

Knowing a name might not really tell you much more.

Pretty near indestructible and no battery problems!
