wolfcraft drill stand

picked up this wolfcraft drill stand at the car boot this morning for the princely sum of £2 and it has a metal gear on the rise/fall mechanism! does anyone know what the part with two odd shaped holes is for?

Here is an older thread that shows a similar drill stand. The mystery piece on your stand might be in the wrong location and missing a part.

thanks for that mike, informative and i hadnt thought of putting my router in it. having now given the stand a good clean the mystery bit is now above the main moving bit and fits like a glove there. there also appears to be a hook for a return spring ?? hence the d shaped hole. I will have to see if I can find something suitable
