Full length cyclone separators Vs short ones?

Can folks tell me the difference in performance between a full length cyclone separators...

For a cyclone to work efficiently, it needs to build up a vortex, so I'd guess the second one attached to a cylindrical bin would not work as well, ... and also get gradually worse as the bin fills.

The second one is more like thien baffle .
 
I think the second one might be part of a cyclone, ie it is missing the bottom. The second one might work to help filter out the really coarse stuff, until the bin fills up enough that the turbulence of the air currents is sufficient to either scour dust of the top of the pile or you get a high enough velocity for it to basically just act as a bend.

The cone is pretty important to the overall function.
