Fitting butt hinges

Can anyone give me some help on the basics / golden rule of fitting a window or door with butt hinges. I've made the frames (lights) as replacements to fit in the frame but always have problems with butt hinges. Do you recess each leaf of the hinge in the frame and light or double thickness on one side...how thick do you recess it....... can you mark out it out using the hinge at right angles ? Sorry if it's a basic question..Thanks Geoff

Same technique for bigger doors or windows.

The only time you really want to do a double depth mortice in the frame is when your trying to align the barrel of the hinge with a beaded face frame like this:

Chems---it's called a "cock bead" I believe. It's a neat touch.

Well explained video Chems thanks for the link....I have found my mistake already by watching it, I am setting the hinge in too far...now for the pudding ! Geoff

I prefer the hinge to be double cut on the door when you have a cock bead.

I think it keeps the beading line nice and clean.
