After destroying a few pieces of wood I thought it was time to have a go at turning something a bit more challenging. It's dog rough but I'm almost happy with my efforts.

Thanks guys, this afternoon it was back into the wood for another stick as my youngster wants me to have a go at a stool for one of her pot plants but first I must put a better edge on a chisel. Onwards and upwards hopefully.

Excellent.
Your wood would run truer if you had cut a tenon to mount in the chuck. It is the shoulder of the tenon against the front face of the jaws that keeps the wood true .
The tenon should be the size of where the jaws form a perfect circle which is normally when there is about a 3mm gap between the jaws & the tenon should be shallower than the depth of the jaws.
