Its been one thing after another since my son fell ill in August but today I got some decent quality turning time in. Made this spalted beech bowl circa 8" which Paulm kindly gave me the wood for about 18 months ago. Beautiful wood, if a little punky to finish but the spalting was wonderful.

I also knocked out a few apples, from yew, apple and Eucalytpus respectively.

Lastly, I promised I would post the "a pair of something" from last months competition that I didn't get published in time. 2 candlesticks from English Walnut.

Great colouring catch on the Bowl.

Think you need to spray the fruit trees next year, apples look a bit scabby. :)

What did you finish the bowl with Rob, looks good ? :)

Might even do some turning myself after weeks of cutting up blanks on the bandsaw, about time I made something of a few of them !!!

Cheers, Paul

The bowl looks fantastic. the fruit well the "scabby one " as CHJ puts it is the best looking one there, but they are all well turned. The candle sticks although are well turned look like they are upside down.

Lovely bit of spalting, I recently cut down a huge beech tree all of which was spalted, unfortunately nearly all of it was too far gone to use, its a fine line.

Fab bit of beech Paul...thanks again for it by the way. The finish was Cellulose SS which I burnished with shavings and then a coat of MC wax. I'd be interested to know how long you've had that because it was so dry it was like turning dust, I had to wear the mask all the way through instead of just at the sanding stage.

Thanks Dalboy.

The scabby one is in fact a whole network of bark inclusions. Its bordering on hollow inside there's that much inclusion. I laughed when you said upside down and really see what you mean :)

I think you're right...too soon and the spalting isn't that spectacular or its just in the sapwood, too long and its that punky rotten mess. I feel an experiment coming on. Similar logs left on the ground for varying numbers of months to plot the spalting progress....anyone done this per chance?
