What's the best filer to use for nail-holes. I want something that'll sand smooth and be invisible under paint in pine.

I've been using car body filler because I've got some to hand, but I have loads to do and it's a bit of a pain because it hardens too quickly, so I wondered if there was something better?

Thanks

Go to a glass fibre suppliers and get a small tin of styrene - you can keep your filler going indefinitely.
It isn't cheap, but a little goes a long way and it's cheaper than throwing half full cans of filler away.
Just mix a little in when the filler starts to stiffen, or put a teaspoonful in on top when you you put the stuff away. For small holes and hairline cracks it can be an advantage to be able to use it softer, anyway.

Putty. Dead cheap, easy to apply. I'd prime first then fill holes. Can be sanded smooth and painted before it's quite dry.

Very few people use putty for anything at all, so they're not likely to have it to hand. Why use putty when a two part is hard and ready to paint a few minutes after you've used it?

It's the best wood filler under oil paint, easy to use and very cheap.
Keeps well if wrapped in polythene to keep air out. If necessary softens very nicely in a microwave.
Stays workable for long enough to finish most jobs without having to stop and mix more etc.

I like 151 wood filler, have used a few times and it's my favourite so far
