I thought I'd post this image to show how useful an ambient air filter is. I have a Microclene (400 I think) but only switch it on when sanding and overnight after I leave the shed due to the noise level. I also have a Camvac dust extractor which, again, i only use when sanding due to the noise. When turning I tend to wear a rubber dust mask from Craft Supplies.
The following image is the filter from the Microclene after maybe 10 hours of use over the last month or so turning very dry wood. The stripe down the middle is a section I vaccumed to show the contrast.
