Hi Brian.
How long is a piece of string?
The pilot hole would depend a lot on the type of wood you are using. Softer woods smaller hole, harder woods larger hole, but always leaving enough for the threads to bite onto.
One thing is not to make the hole too small for the screw, it is possible to snap/bend the screw if not careful.
Measure the solid centre of the screw and drill a hole either that size, or slightly smaller in soft wood. That should do it. Also make sure you leave a little hollow around the screw hole to allow the displaced timber to swell a little, it can cause the blank to wobble a little other wise.
