Does anyone know much about the effects of continuous saturation on hardwood doorsteps? Due to the rain lately I've noticed a number of friends doorsteps have been saturated since at least December. I checked mine which is also saturated. A couple of these seem fairly soft in parts and it seems as if they are starting to rot. Mine also seems to be softening up.
Hardwoods are used on these as they aren't usually painted and have greater resistance to rotting than the softwood frames. Has anyone else noticed this and are we likely to be seeing them rot out due to the continual saturation we've had lately?
I'm a bit concerned as I've recently fitted an oak doorstep to a property and am wondering how it's likely to stand up.
