Does anybody know what this is?

Hi there,
Would anyone have any idea what this is? I found a few in my dad's workshop and was curious to know. Seems to be made of steel, with a screwthread at one end and the strange plaited-like effect at the 'business' end, which is eithercoated or hardened in some way. It's about 4" long.
Any ideas please?

That was cool, Jake - I didn't know you could do that.

I was wrong about the drain rods, by the look of it.

Thanks for that Jake. At least you can see it now. Drain rod - could be, yes. The casting is quite rough at the plaited end.

It's a rag bolts for fixing items in concrete, either cast in situ or set in hot lead (runny).

Thank you CNC Paul, I've found a couple of those exact thingies in the garage when I moved into the house. I guessed they were a bolt of somekind - but what for I'd no idea. Now I'm sure I'll think of a use for them.
