Do folk on here share kit?

Hi

As a newcomer I wondered if the amateur/hobbyists amongst us ever shared equipment? For example, I have inherited a nice drum sander which doesn't see a lot of use... and would love to access a laser cutter (and someone that knows how to work it).

There must be some scope for folk to access different tools rather than us all building a workshop?

Anyone in Buckinghamshire want to swap notes?

I have seen lots of kind offers on here where more experienced members have helped out others.

Generally people on here are very kind and willing to assist.

A brief exchange like that is only any good for quick jobs I would imagine?

Without getting into the minutiae of insurance cover against accidents/injury when using shared kit, it probably comes down to mutual trust. My sons-in-law use my kit and vice versa, but even there, occasionally stuff comes back (to me, I hasten to add) in a less good state than I would like. So if someone who is just an acquaintance uses your kit, you need to be sure that they will treat it with respect. Most will, and while sharing makes a lot of sense, it can be a bit delicate.

Not specifically woodworking kit. My late Dad, years ago, was very generous when it came to lending tools out, He lost so many over the years that I said I wouldn't lend tools out. I'm quite happy to do the job with you, but letting tools out of my sight, no. sorry

My friend and I swapped chainsaws regularly as we had different sized ones - he would lend only to me and I would lend only to him. If a chain was damaged, we replaced it. You need to very careful, especially with dangerous stuff. As an aside, he did say once that he loved lending his gear to me - it always came back in better condition than it went out. I can think of only a couple of people I would lend tools to.

there's no way I'd be sharing any tools of mine, people can and do abuse your trust, that's the problem.

No, mine's mine.
Having spent many years, building up a kit that works for me, I'm keeping it, in the condition I want.
Saying that, I have a "site" box, which has less precious, but fully usable tools, that I'll let most use.
Lent out a lawn mower once...cost the borrower, more than the cost of a new one, to repair the damage. Tried to cut a whirly gig washing line stump, twisted the crankshaft, new crankshafts cost more than a full new engine.
