Dash Cam......which would you recommend...if at all?

No experience of using one, but after watching Car Crash Britain - Caught on Camera on ITV last night it seems like a good idea, might also get you an insurance discount.

I just did a quick google search and the first result is for swiftcover, http://www.swiftcover.com/carinsurance/dashcams/

they offer a 10% discount with a dash cam, 12.5% if its a Nextbase dashcam.

Dash cams are special - not in terms of picture quality, but in terms
of features - like motion detect auto start, very wide angle lenses,
and rolling card-write (so that you have a rolling window of video,
and the card is never "full").

Normal cameras, regardless of optical quality,
that lack these features are not good dash cams,
even if they're good cameras.

While we all make mistakes some drivers attitudes are a bit wanting.
I would like something discreet that would fit in front of the rear view mirror.
Not seen one yet, but it's the way forward, I'm afraid.

The Blackview are very popular on the discovery 3 forum that I am on. It may be worth joining a forum and seeing if there is a club discount.

I too can confirm the Blackvue are very good. Marcos - what's your forum username? Are you talking disco3 or disco3club?

I've got a cheap £50 one from CPC and that works well but although it's an HD recording it's nowhere near as clear as a Blackvue. If you want to read registrations from a few feet away then you'll need a decent one. I think it's lens and compression that are the key factors as most seem to record in HD.

I think that I am marcros on there too. To be honest I have little to no mechanical knowledge so I don't contribute very often and tend to just look when I have an issue. I have used a few of their site sponsors though and where everybody has one of a small number of models of equipment, special forum deals work well. On here where there are hundreds of different models of, for instance, table saw it is much harder.

Hang round any camera forum, and you'll find that there's more to a camera than mega-pixels (which is what HD is)

The only thing which lets it down is the holder which has nylon threads. Bought a readily available replacement with metal threads for less than £5. I see Rolson also do an almost identical holder.
