Hi all,

I am building a small cupboard with two doors from 18mm MDF.

As my frame will be 18mm thick and the two doors approximately 250mm wide and 400mm high, closing in the centre, how much clearance should I give the doors top and bottom and on either sides to meet comfortably in the centre?

I am also using 1mm thick flush hinges (1.1/2") - should I deduct this width as well?

Thanks - answers in mm please! have no idea what 3/32 works out to!

The best work ought to have a clearance of the thickness of a piece of veneer...which is 0.6mm, but for more utilitarian pieces I'd try and get the clearance as close as you can without having a gap that you can drive a Routemaster through - Rob

If you are using 1mm flush hinges these will give a gap of 1mm, though they tend to come out a bit more.

so if your opening is 500mmx 400mm I would go for doors of 248mmx 397mm. to be on the safe side leave them a bit large until they are hung and then plane to give an equal gap.
