The BBC reported on this story a week or so back, it's about a company working with Bovingdon Category C prison in Hertfordshire to produce chopping boards and other kitchen paraphernalia.

To channel my inner Ronnie Barker, presumably no screws are involved in the manufacturing process...

I know some serial killers were handy with hammers and screwdrivers but this is a bit much! they should be breaking rocks with a sledgehammer not enjoying woodworking like we do, what next give them a few classic cars to restore? not exactly punishment for committing crimes?

Isn't our criminal justice system based on rehabilitation rather than punishment?

That's a great story. Good to get the men working and doing something useful that may just help them on release towards career, or at least to show them that they can DO something useful. Yes, the prisoners should be punished, but being locked up for years is punishment. Provided the workshop positions are 'earned' with good behaviour and a privilage and not just for everyone, then I believe it's a good thing being done.

I think its just Womens prisons making them, just the prisoners- no screws, all tongue & groove.

Sorry but i don't agree about rehab rather than punishment, having been the victim of crime a few times...... I had 2 brand new motorbikes stolen in 3 months by some scum which although my insurance paid up my insurance went sky high and cost me a fortune. My home was burgled while i was at work and what wasn't stolen was smashed by 4 vermin who got litter picking for punishment BUT worse was to come, in 1998 I was attacked by 3 Asians while using a cash machine..... I was punched/kicked and finally slashed with a stanley knife (14" scars) and the B's got away with it! I was a 30+ year old 6'4" Biker but no match for iron bar and knives...... after that i suffered panic attacks and I only improved when i moved up here out in a wild part of Scotland. You would think you are pretty safe when your my size but its not fun being attacked and I still won't go out to pubs or go to ANY cities. So all this talk about the sodding poor vermin criminals getting rehab and enjoying themselves doing woodwork really waters me off, I would cut all of their throats given the chance as they are nothing but worthless SCUM.
Sorry if you disagree but to be honest i don't give a toss as a victim I think i have every reason to hate them.

Not sure why the race of the offenders makes any difference.

Thing is whether you agree or not our justice system isn't based on punishment of the offender.

I thought prison was meant to be a deterrent? If it's not meant to deter people from committing a crime then what is the point of it? If it is meant to deter people then it should be a punishment. I would have thought that being in prison should be horrible and miserable and generally the worst place in the world, then it would stop people from committing crime in the future if they thought then ended up there. I'm not against rehabilitation but I would think that should be a 6 month programme at the end of a sentence and possibly even handled at a different institution. So you have the hardship of prison followed by a programme to help people and that should really be linked into a programme of work for those that need it / want it. If you don't enter the work programme then you don't get benefits until you've been employed for 6 months.

So you're encouraged to find work and the fear of prison prevents you committing crime.
