My lounge carpet has been attacked by either beetle or moth. It's right on the threshold of the lounge door, and it's obviously a trip hazard, as it's separated itself from the threshold strip under the door, on both sides. :(

Is it possible to cut back the carpet to good material, and then re-stretch towards the threshold strip? Or will I need to make a hardwood threshold, under the door, and cut back to that?

Thanks in anticipation.

John :)

Carpet beetles can be a big problem have you had a exterminator in?

I would either claim of your insurance or make a hardwood strip, carpet can be joined but depending on how old it it it will look different to the original, even more so in a high wear area like a doorway.

Hi Peter.

I haven't had any problems elsewhere, so I haven't bothered with an 'extermination'. This damage has been on a 'tuit list' for some time, as initially I suspected it was friction wear from the door. It isn't of course. I can't find any signs of larvae, chrysalis cases, or adult beetles. I do have a fair few of those small clothes moths though, but I can't find any signs of moth attack in clothing, (Mostly because there's little natural fibre in clothes these days!) or anywhere else. It's possible they might find the carpet to their liking. The carpet is a woollen Axminster and, as I warned my Lady when we bought it, it could suffer insect attack! I think it will be a hardwood strip under the door. I'll get No. 1 Son to kneel down and fit it!

Thanks again Peter.

John Thanks

We suffer from Carpet Beetles though I've never seen any of their damage.
We see the Beetles and the Wooly Bear caterpillars climbing up walls now and then.
They prefer undisturbed, out of the way areas so it's very unlikely they will have attacked your threshold area?
Carpets can be joined but I would think it very likely to be obvious in that situation so perhaps a wood insert is the way to go?
We've just had our carpets replaced after 20 yrs and the threshold area had worn there too.

Thanks Rod.

Maybe this is just wear damage after all then, but either way it's till in need of a repair. So I'm off to get a nice piece of cherry from my stock!
Might even post it in 'The last thing I made!'

Thanks folks.
