I am looking into cyclones and separators to reduce dust entering my RSDE-2 extractor. I would like to maintain the 4 inch pipe from machine to extractor and have looked at the super dust deputy which is a heart stopping 275 pounds. Then I cam across the Camvac black interceptor lid at a mere 21.00 and find I have an old plastic water butt that would be the right size and want to ask if this actually will work to separate out the heavy debris from the planer/thicknesser? I saw in a post from June 2009 that johnf says he has one of these, but being new to this forum I cannot work out how to contact him, if in fact I can do that, hence my posting to the general forum for assistance.

I got one of these from the Tool post last year, coupled it with a 200 litre plastic bin and it works a treat. I put the bin outside the workshop and in the extractor bag I just have a layer of dust in the bag - it is surprisingly effective. I did add a neoprene seal around the bin lid, I used a suitable d section car seal from Fleabay and glued to the rim, a total cost of around a fiver. I can say I was looking at a cyclone arrangement but this ticks all the boxes as to reiterate very effective with only fine dust in the extractor bag.

This is exactly the system I used to use; a twin motor Camvac, large water butt and a black 'separator' lid on top and yes, it does work quite well. If you disregard the stuff in the foreground of these two pics.....

...you can see the water butt, Camvac and separator lid. However, I wanted to have a cyclonic system in the 'shop. As I result, I used a Dust Deputy Super which I fitted on top of the separator, which is now glued permanently to the water butt with copious amounts of silicon sealant. Although it's not clear in the pics, the cyclone is bolted to a 12mm ply disc which is in turn bolted (with 8mm coach bolts) to the top of separator. The system works really well and only very fine dust is sucked into the Camvac; the filters of which are cleaned every Sunday morning to maintain full suckage - Rob
