Can anyone recommend any books on how to use the sorts of finishes generally only used by the pros? We often hear that Acid Cat finishes are great, but I have no idea how to apply them properly and safely, nor of what to ask for when ordering.

Just ask for an a/c lacquer or primer, the dealer will know what your talking about.
You'll need to state the sheen you want as well, ie 20% sheen is a semi matt finish
As far as i'm aware a/c finishes need to be sprayed on to get a good finish, I have a spray booth and spray guns etc, not sure about these low volume guns.
