looking to either buy or keep saving up for....

biscuit jointer and a sander..

first what do i want from these tools.
B-jointer fast and easy construction of back panels, the odd groove ect and what most use it for, im thinking of one of these because they are small and can be stored away, limited space.

the sander.. i want one that i can use to finish up a project where a block of mdf with paper around it just won't do..

i have a wet/dry vac to hook them up to so i have that covered.

as far as budget goes the b-jointer i don't want to spend too much say £100ish give or take.

the sander, what ever type that is. i will pay what ever gets me a reliable tool that will work and work well for years.
(price for this isn't an issue..... gulp!!)

thanks
TT

The obvious answer on the sander is festool, but there is a bosch one In the for sale section that looks good value.

In my opinion, the likes of bosch, metabo etc were perfectly good until festool came on the scene, which takes it to a different level. The previous standard equates to about half the price- you pay your money, you take your choice.

Personally, I would go with the bosch or metabo until you know exactly what tasks you need it for and only then look at a specialist bit of kit.

Biscuit jointer- I had a makita that was solid, but I would save for the domino if you are looking at doing joinery professionally.

For a sander be it powered by electricity or air I highly recommend the Mirka range.
http://www.mirka.com/uk/uk/UK_TOOLS/UK_ ... D6502011UK

I have the air powered ROS (150mm) and it is faultless. My brother in law owns a bodyshop and we've tested the both types of electric powered sanders that Mirka do and both of them are brilliant.
The DEROS is extremely good, it's smooth and quiet and to be honest when mine dies ( if it ever dies I should add considering the hammering it's had ) the DEROS is on my buy immediately list.

Having recently bought both Festool and Mirka I can recommend these, particularly for the dustlessness of them. The Mirka is particularly light weight, which is brilliant for doing walls or working high. However including abrasives etc you are looking at vast amounts of money.

I have the Festool ro90 (small discs, switches from mild to really aggressive and and converts to delta type) and Mirka Ceros 650CV (6" disc) which covers a number of eventualities. I think it is impossible to find one sander to do lots of jobs, but possibly the Mirka Deros which can take three different size discs is most flexible.

For me, the light weight of the Mirka is a very strong plus point, though you really must remember to switch it off when changing discs

I bought a second-hand Makita biscuit jointer off ebay for around £150 two years ago and so far it has worked well. It's very robust and I'm pleased with it.

Thanks for all the great advice.
I'm going to hold off on the b-jointer for a while I think, the practise doing the joints won't kill me.
But the sander is on the list.

I'm going to have a word with my tutor tomorrow and see what she says. I'm thinking makita tbh. Festool is a bit expensivenes unless I can get for the right price.

Thanks again I really appreciate it.

I'm going to need a thicknesser at some stage as you have all be so helpful any reccomendations? Has to be a small one...

The school I learned in used Mirka air powered sanders. I bought an electric Mirka Ceros 650V and absolutely love it! The part you hold is incredibly light which is great if you have a lot of sanding to do. I use it for everything from rough work to fine finishing.
Good luck!
