A few years ago I was at Donnington Park for the MotoGP, my wife had won a competition to be guests of The Grasini team. As part of the win we had dinner with the team and guests. On our table was Jim Redman who had rode the Honda six back in the 60s.

Now I am a motorcycle nut so this was seventh heaven for me but we found Jim Redman a most inspirational man. He was great company and his stories were amazing. The following day at the track he was demonstrating the bike and when he started it up the whole grandstand shook.

On the same day Scott Redding won the 125 race.

I think there were only about half a dozen of the 250cc six replicas made and all were prohibitively expensive.

Fabulous piece of engineering.

Do you remember the NR750 with 8 valves per cylinder?

Nice but it's got the wrong badge on it.

I had a Honda 250 many years ago when i was 17 ,it never sounded like that. It was a bit of a slug so a Yamaha RD250 air cooled two stroke came next and i passed my test on that bike on my 18 th birthday .

Mick was that the day Scott was the youngest rider to win a gp ? Sounds like you had a great time , I have never been to a gp but turned 50 in october and the dragon got tickets for the Silverstone gp this year for me cant wait.

Cheers Bern.

That was the day. It was an amazing experience.

I often go to the GPs and WSB even though you see more on the telly there's nothing like being there.

Enjoy Silverstone.

Nev: Did you notice how the mechanic kept it revving high? That's because they had no flywheel weights on the crank and if it was allowed to drop it would simply stop.

Steve: What bike have you got Steve? I haven't got one any more but I've had over 30. My last two were Yamaha FJR 1300's. Sports tourer, 145BHP missile.

Gray, I'm technically between bikes at the mo but SWMBO has stored (in MY workshop! Hence the lack of space) a 2002 R6, last of the carbed models and a Kenny Roberts Thundercat.

I owned a Thundercat for 9 years from nearly new only being relieved of ownership in 2007. I replaced that with a Thunderace. I've probably had around 40 different bikes in the last 18 years, always more than one at a time. The majority have been Yamaha but I've also has quite a few Kwaks and a couple of Hondas and one Suzuki (one was enough!).

My race bikes have been VFR400 NC24, FZR400 3EN1, FZ600R (most of the builds I've done for other people have been FZ600's for the EMRA Classics) and an FZR750 OW01.

Wow! A proper biker! My Brother in law still has a Thundercat bought nearly new. I had an FZR1000 a while ago, that was an animal. Where have you raced?

I've been involved at varying levels most of my life. Last involvement was sponsorship of a couple of British Superstock riders (separately) a few years ago when I had a bigger business. One of whom is currently 'resting', a Scots lad called Bryan Campbell, and the other was Howie Mainwaring. We helped him when he ran his own Suzuki in the Superbike cup, then for 2 years in the Superstocks. He's just put in some good performances on a Superbike last year and has taken Chris Walkers ride for this year. Good to see him at the front at last! I raced for a year then worked for 5 years as a mechanic, 2 of which at International level taking in 1 GP. That was 30 years ago when the formats were different and GP riders rode in 'money Internationals' one off events. Imagine Rossi turning up at Oulton or Brands for a one day meet on his works Yam?!!

The guy I worked for lives in your neck of the woods. He is just on the Bolton side of the hills in Egerton.

This is Howie on the 'Irlam Suzuki' (My company was Irlam Building & Joinery but we went for Irlam Windows on the fairing).

I raced three seasons in F400 ('03-'05) after leaving TH Motorsport at the end of 2002, the first on the NC24 and then the other two on the FZR and one season in the EMRA Classics on the FZ600 ('06) (that's how I started building the FZ600 race bikes and last season six of my builds finished in the top ten). Over the years I've done 3 Sisters, Cadwell, Oulton, Croft, Mallory, Snetterton (old circuit), Anglesey, Darley Moor, Donnington, Castle Coombe and Lydden Hill.

My old company when I was in Southampton, Selective Home Improvements, was a small sponsor to the Rizla Suzuki WSB team in 2004/2005. It was Mallory 2005 I blagged a ride on John Hopkins' spare race bike with disasterous consequences for the bike

Great history there. Do you still do race prep? What happened to Hoppers bike????? The guy I was telling you about races a KTM dirt bike now (aged 54!!). Do you do anything with dirt bikes? He switched to 2 stroke last year and had his 4 stroke for sale when it got pinched.

I've not built any bikes since May last year. I knew my current domestic situation was impending so I deliberately turned down any orders for this year. I need to get myself settled back in Birmingham now and need to find a unit before I can consider taking on any more builds.

JH's bike was a write off  technically it wasn't completely my fault but I compounded the damage by panicking. Basically I was on my second lap belting down to the hairpin and one of the brake hoses burst. I panicked and forgot to use the gears to slow me down enough. The bike rammed the Armco head on at about 80mph and I went flying, coming to rest upside down against the chain link fence. Snapped the fork stanchions and cracked the headstock weld. I came away with a broken wrist and concussion.

I've never had anything to do with dirt bikes, trikes or quads. I've never seen the attraction tbh, I much prefer road racing (ie; circuit racing). I do like rally cars though

You couldn't be blamed for that if the hose burst. Still a great experience riding a world class race bike. I seem to remember Shakey stepping off a Rizla Suzuki at Snett because the front brake lever pin had come out due to a mechanics error. Same mechanic????

We started off on dirt bikes so a natural regression. Not for me though. Too many aches and pains as it is!!!!
