best way to seal new moulding onto door

I refurbishing a victorian exterior door and have renewed the mouldings, what advice would you give to seal/attach them onto the door so that water cant penetrate behind the moulding and so I can stain it without it being noticeable?

Would need more details.
Staining new wood on old work is doomed unless the stain is so dense it is more like paint. So paint - much more sensible.
