Hi,

We have an oak surround to our kitchen sink that I need to re-finish. I am torn between oil or varnish, any suggestions please ? Also can you actually use a combination of both ?

Thanks for any advice.

Fiddes hardwax oil seems to work pretty well. Nothing is permanently waterproof short of some resin encapsulation method, so whatever you use needs to be maintained - and oils are easier to refresh than varnishes.

We use Howdens Worktop oil, which I believe is a danish oil. Goes on easily, seems pretty good resistance, mid sheen unless you buff it up big style. Does need a re-oil as you would expect, but that is a very gentle fine grade rub down, then re coat as per instructions.
