Hi

Sorry if this has been done before but I’m new to carving and looking to get some advice on what to buy to start off, I am looking to start by following some of the excesses from ‘A manual of wood carving’ by John Jacob Holtzapffel (Author), Charles Godfrey Leland (Author) to build some skill and get an idea of if I like it of not. I’ve been looking at:

Henry Taylor Beginners Wood Carving Tools Set on Tool nut and Henry Taylor Beginners Wood Carving Tools Set 2 also on tool nut (Sorry I cant post links) As two different option so that I can get a good feel for carving I want to start with Relief carving and then maybe progress to in the round at a later date. I like to have nice tools etc. and have seen the Chris Pye range from Auriou and would like to get some of these (As they look nice to me?) Range avalible:

Straight Gouge #3 width 8mm £24.40
Allongee Gouge #3 width 14mm £27.79
Allongee Gouge #3 width 20mm £25.70
Straight Gouge #6 width 8mm £25.40
Allongee Gouge #6 width 14mm £28.40
Allongee Gouge #6 width 20mm £26.20
Straight Gouge #9 width 8mm £28.40
Straight Gouge #9 width 14mm £31.40
Allongee Gouge #9 width 20mm £29.00
V-Tool 60° width 10 £36.00
Straight Skew Chisel width 10mm £18.60

Could anyone recommend which tools would be best to start with, I’m looking to buy 3 or 4 tools similar to the sets above (or different is one thinks thats best) that will get me started and let me progress a little into relief carving once I have mastered some skills.

I look forward to you responses and help

Regards

Jotham
