I'm not sure if I can stretch my budget to mirka,
My AEG ex150es ( clone of the metabo sxe450) I got for £40 used is total champ at the sanding power however
-It's Unbelievably loud at 90+ DB
-Is damn heavy,no problem on flat surfaces, but kinda hard when you need to hold it in air

Want to upgrade my sanding system to something that is much much more quiet ( I heard that the mirka is pretty good with that, however I can't afford to drop £300 on a sander :( ) I don't care about the noise it makes when I have ear protection on, but I don't want my neighbours ,others living in the house listening to me sanding for a couple hours a day.

Is there anything that you would suggest that would be good at this ( 150mm disc is kinda must-have as well)
And cost maybe max £150? I have no problems with used tools either!
Thanks.

Metabo SXE 450 TurboTec.

No idea how the noise levels compare to others. I'd imagine any sander and dust extractor will make a bit of a racket when running together.
It's fairly heavy I guess but I never found it particularly difficult to sand walls and ceilings with. Although if that was the primary task for the sander rather than woodworking, then I'd save up and get the Mirka.

woodworking is the primary, and the weight issue really isn't that big ,however the noise is, and I believe I already got pretty much the same unit as the SXE 450 as it's a clone of it. At the moment I do not have any dust extraction whatsoever only the dust bag on the sander itself and it makes a huuuuge mess, however the plan was to get a new much more quiter sander and get a shop-vac and build a noise insulation box for it like this:

Are you sure it's not faulty? I have the Dewalt clone of the Metabo and it's not noisy at all. I agree it is heavy though and wouldn't fancy holding it up all day

The noise levels of the sanders you're considering should be in the instruction manuals - you should be able to find them online

Probably positive that it's not faulty, when tested it seems to do 95-100db , in the manual for it it says 95 as well, checked the metabo version and it has the same ratings.
the Mirka I think did 67db in specs, I would be happy even with one that would do 75 as well.

There are hundreds of different sanders, so Wanted to ask opinion over here.

Have spent looking for different models for a few hours today and seems like the most compact/powerful/ quiet is still the mirka?
Seems like will have to wait for the right ebay auction and try to get one , No way I'm spending over £300 for it..

Btw anyone have one and how are they? Anything to look for when buying 2nd hand?
Thanks.

how loud is your dust extractor- i would have thought that would be louder than the sander- certainly with my metabo and lidl vacuum combo that is the case.

Honestly I only have a chip extractor for my P/T which would work as a dust extractor however its way too loud and I don't even use it when sanding and let all the dust fly around ( though I put the pieces I'm sanding on a thick blanket which catches like 50% of the dust) still the rest that aren't caught by the sanders filter bag goes awol in the room and makes a huge mess)

Plan was to get a new better Sander AND a small shop vac for which I can build an insulated box to keep it quiet as well.

Well just paid for a Mirka Deros 150mm , 8months old
Hopefully will be decent, they certainly keep their prices really well and don't come up for sale often.

Had a long thought about it sanding today for a couple of hours and after finishing sanding, all the room was in huuuge dust cloud which I will have to spend half an hour cleaning up as always, hopefully coupled with a dust collector placed in an insulated box to reduce noise wont have that problem anymore.

Received the mirka deros today and.. well... I'm slightly disappointed,ok actually a LOT when you look how much that thing costs!
It looks like a £50 toy to be honest, Got mine used and in pretty good condition
-It has less sanding power than my previous sander (the metabo sxe450 clone)
-It Isn't Quiet - It has written in specs 67db , You can get those 67db IF its on the lowest setting, once you put it on medium its more like 82db , if on highest its as loud as my previous sander.
-It doesn't leaves any better finish than my previous sander which cost me 5x less , and again has less stock removal power even they both have the same large orbits.
-The accessories are damn stupidly overpriced, seriously £34 for a hose? :D

Seems like I felt just for an marketing trick... Surely it's a decent sander but not worth the £340 it costs new AT ALL!

You don't have much luck with tools do you!!! Do you ever stop moaning??? LOL

without moaning and always trying to find a better way you can't really grow or gain more knowledge, can you?

How are you measuring the sound level?

I do this as part of my profession (a real one that requires years of study), any test equipment costing under say £2K is just giving you a vague indictation.
Also the readout is logrithmic not linear - but you knew that did't you?

Unless you are exaggerating about the dust, I'll give you 5 years before you are an invalid with COPD (look it up!)
