Hi.

After being made redundant as an alarm engineer I'm doing a few jobs on the side to keep me going.

Therefore, I'm after a well-priced, corded SDS drill.

So far, I've found these three:

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/58494/Pow ... Plus-Drill

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/p ... searchtext>SDS+DRILL.htm

http://www.power-tools-pro.co.uk/makita ... rrency=GBP

Which is the best, please and will it last, please? Really can't go much above my budget of £40 - £70.

I'm naturally drawn to the Makita but am thinking at only 400W it may not be powerful enough to get through thick concrete or stone.

However, I've just come across the HITACHI DH24PC3 SDS HAMMER DRILL 240V which looks awesome for my needs but do I need it at that price?

I really need something with reverse also.

Opinions welcome and any other recommendations.

Thanks in advance.

Your title says cordless and the thread say corded, or is it just me?

The links are for corded

I have one that looks very similar to the "Direct Power" one in your first link; paid around £30 for it about eight years ago and it's been horribly abused by me, plumbers and sparkies on various jobs. It's still going strong, still plugs a core through masonry for soil pipes, no problem. No clutch though, and no reverse as far as I'm aware.

It has the usual 'cheap tool' issues e.g. stupidly short mains cable and crappy plastic case, but performance-wise I can't fault it for the money - though if I was buying something I know I wanted to last, then I'd probably be looking at a known brand.

HTH, cheers Pete.

Have a look in your local B+Q, they've had a DeWalt SDS+ and a small cordless on offer in the past. IIRC the set was around £80 -£90. The DeWalt is well regarded on here as a good, basic, bombproof drill.

Screwfix also used to do the same deal, but I just checked, and it's not on at the moment. If you can wait a little, I'm sure that a similar deal will come up.

Cheers

Aled

I have a simular makita for about the last 8 years. For four of those years it recievied moderate diy use, and for the last four it has been used alot more, as I am now a kitchen maker/fitter. I have found it to be a great drill, and whats further I have never had to have it repaired.

I know nothing about the other drills, but if it were my choice I'd have the makita (or a bosch/hitachi/dewalt)

I bought the fist one on your list from the same place. It lasted me for 6 months hard use and then fell apart in the middle of a job. I think these things are hit and miss with the cheapy ones. Some people get lucky and they last a long time while others don't get off so easy.

The next one i bought i think is a trighton or something not sure. Seems a bit more robust and came with a lot of extra's I'll see if i can dig it up tomorrow but i may of left it on my jobsite which i won't be back to for a couple of weeks when i've finished the windows.

EDIT - sorry, I've just realised that the following offer is for a 110V machine:

Screwfix have just put a 550W bosch on sale for £70 (£63 if you get their 10% discount emails) here

I was at Selco Builders Warehouse this evening getting some supplies and they have an offer on at the mo.

A Silverline 2KG corded SDS, 3 function for £40 - seemed very good value. I don't normallyy buy cheapo tools these days - but occasionally do require a use and abuse one.

Don't know where you are but Selco do have branches all over the place.
