Hi is my first post on here Im a joiner from the wirral.

Im looking to change my band saw recently bought a Fox F28-186 which i purchaced a new blade of tuffsaws (3/16 6 tpi) for it. I mainly want to use it for things like bandsaw boxes ect 4-5" thick solid hardwoods.. Problem is with the Fox F28-186 which i has only has a 370w motor struggles to cut that thickness of hardwood even with new blade!

Can anyone tell me tell me if i was to upgrade to the Fox F28-191 which has a 750w motor whould that cope with 4-5" thich hardwood for bandsaw boxs?
Or the other model is the The Axminster Hobby AWHBS350N which also has 750W

And also what is the ideal blade I need for these bandsaw boxes??

Thanks Gareth.

I'm not surprised that you are struggling in 5" hardwood with only 350W at your disposal, especially if that is the input power and not the output.
750W is about 1 hp, so it will be more up for the job. I can't say for sure, though, that it will cope with anything you throw at it. You are still looking at hobby saws.
As for blade, ring Ian and talk to him, he will advise you. If you are making curved BS boxes, then stay with a narrow blade. How many TPI do you have on the blade you are using?
Regards
Steve

Thanks for the reply steve , im looking at changing the saw to a 750w now which i hope will manage better.
The blade i tried yesterday was a tuff saw blade 6mm and 6 tpi i think .

The model im look at is Fox F28 191
Quick question if the bottom metal guides to the saw werent square (as the mounting bracket was welded off square) then would this dull the blade if it came into contact ?

Any metal coming into contact with the teeth of the blade will dull the teeth, and quite quickly, too. But if the guides are adjusted correctly the teeth should always clear them, it is only the body of the blade that the guides should support. The exception to this is with very narrow blades, say 1/8" and under, where there is so little body that it becomes impossible not to touch the teeth, in which case you should use soft guides like wood or tufnol. I use MDF facings when using my 1/16" blade for dovetails, for example. The teeth cut into the MDF but do not get damaged. The body remains supported.

Right thanks that is probably where ive gone wrong then the blade was probably too far back and because the lower guides were squewiff then the blade has dulled and resulting in a poor cut . Ill look into sending this back and upgrading the saw and next time set the guides properly and use wood or mdf . What is tufnol ?

Ignore the 1/4" limit.
As we have been discussing elsewhere recently, it's quite possible to use blades down to 1/16 with only very minor and simple and reversible odifications to the saw.

Tufnol is a composite material made from linen and resin, I believe. It doesn't get hot from friction like steel does.

I'm not familiar with those particular saws, so I can't help you there, I'm afraid. Nor can I find the other discussion, I forget what it was about originally.
But basically you replace the blade guides with wooden ones do that the blade is still supported. The teeth cut into the guides, but because they are wooden they do not get damaged. If you have bearings rather than blocks then you can stick a thin piece of MDF to the surface to do the same job. I do this on my Scheppach for doing dovetails with a 1/16" blade.

Brillant idea thanks steve so aslong as i can get a saw the right size it doesnt matter about th width ? Ideally ill need 3mm blade prob for bandsaw box

Right I have a quick question now on my new bandsaw choice can you look at these links and guide me to the best one ?

As ive previously said i would like to do bandsaw boxs etc mainly with hardwood 4" -5" so the min blade on most of these is 1/4 " (6mm) which i dont know is small anough??

I've had a AWHBS350N Bandsaw for a couple of years (pre new paint job and Hobby labelling) it's always - worked well no problems. I use Tuffsaw blades. I fitted an Axminster Upgrade Fence and modified to make the blade changing easier.

I've cut lots of hardwood thicker than 4", cutting veneers and resizing large boards. Never made a bandsaw box - it would need a narrower blade than I stock.
