Could someone recommend a good book on the band saw for a beginner? (Note my emphasis on beginner )..
I want to learn the basics, such as setting up, how to use, common errors, etc. I have trawled through Amazon and the like and the choice is bewildering. I would add that I don't particularly like DVDs so I am really looking for one that is well illustrated and covers as much ground as possible. I am merely a tinkerer, I don't do a lot of big stuff and am still busy learning woodwork in general.

Pity you don't want DVDs as a Forum member on here produces an excellent set of them?

Do you really need a book? I had a little Burgess to begin with. They are simple things. You soon find out what works and what doesn't. Just get stuck in - but keeping looking at and thinking about what's happening.

I've only recently bought my first band saw.
To be honest I found changing a blade and setting the machine up to be easy and straight forward.
I bought a few band saw blades from Tuff saws and I have to say that the 5/8" 4 tpi blade I've got on there at the moment does give a clean and effortless cut. And it is much better than the manufacturer blade that came with the saw.
I've set the blade up so that the bottom of the blade gullets run on the centre of the top wheel and with the guides set correctly it cuts like a dream.
So far so good.

And according to this guy, forget co-planar:

I think we discussed him last year. They're nice bandsaws, too, and he's evidently a good salesman, but I'll go with Steve Maskery's advice - worked well for me.

:D How much do you think he gets paid for non co-planar?

Get Steve Maskery's DVD - it will tell you all you need to know :)

Cheers

can't lay in bed reading a DVD...

after watching steves dvds you wont be lying in bed needing to read up on sorting your bandsaw - you will be able to get a good nights sleep knowing your machine will be sorted.
speaking from experience i was ready to give up on my bandsaw - got steves dvds and now i love using it and feel like i understand the machine and its operation and how to keep it working as it should - its now a pleasure to use.
good luck with whatever you decide but i cant praise steve and his dvds highly enough - nowhere near as much as they deserve. =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

If you must get a book, I bought "Success with bandsaws", published by GMC Publications, as part of a set from Axy. They currently have the book on offer at half price at £6.95 plus P&P. It has a good review on the Axy website and I found it well laid out and well illustrated. Having said that, I bought the set of Steve's DVDs and would agree with paul-c and others that they are well worth having as having someone show you how to do something is better than just reading about it.
