The green and wetter end of the M4.
To possibly garner a little more interest in the August challenge, and in case newer turners find a cup and saucer a little intimidating (no need to really  ) you can vote for the subject. The one with the most votes before the 1st of the month will be the next challenge.
Please choose from ...

a) the originally planned Cup and Saucer, or
b) anything turned from a 3" cube.

The challenge and voting is open to anyone and everyone regardless of experience or talent, it is simply to get you turning something you may necessarily not have had a go at previously and maybe push you to try something new and and improve your turning (and of course to give us some pics to look at and ideas to pinch  )

This is in the nature of a bump, but it should really be stipulated that anyone who votes has to enter......I think that would be fair?

Oh noes! I went & voted.....

I saw a cup & saucer challenge before and thought, "no danger." Now, I think it is worth a run. I also have something in mind for the cube if that wins out.

I would suggest a 3inch 1 meter pine challenge. You can get 1 metre from your local bulders merchants for less than £5.00. Can guests and long time absentees join in?

I didn't enter May and June because of lack of ability (no idea how to make an animal on the lathe) although after many attempts did finish one for July (photo below)
Sycamore 1.jpg

but due to being at a show for the weekend was unable to post the entry.

I would like to point out that not all of us have lathes which will handle meter long lengths of wood which 'Soulfly' has suggested.

I will vote for a cup and saucer and make an attempt at finishing one of those.

Neck and neck at the moment.......

Such a shame about not uploading the photos, andersonec and Roger Boyle. I'm sure you could have sent them to Nev beforehand so that he could upload them at the right time. That's what I'm hoping to do when we go on holiday, we'll be incommunicado for at least 2 weeks.

My lathe's not long enough for a 1m length of wood, either, I think the 3" cube is an excellent idea, though I can't figure out what I'd make. But that size is OK for any lathe, I'm pretty sure even a Little Gem could handle it (or was that 2" MAX?). And for those who wish to, it would be just possible to squeeze out a minature cup and saucer, I think!

Yes by all means, I am happy to proxy anyones entry if they are going to be away at posting time.

Also nice to see the late 'entries' too, always good to see other ideas :)

ps if i disappear again its down to the dodgy broadband AGAIN

LOL
It really was simply a case of me forgetting (again )
I tend to catch up with family on Skype in the evenings and tend to forget to do much else on the Computer

Can I take that Cup & Saucer is the August Challenge?

What I would find useful is a list of challenges for the next six months, it gives more time and takes the pressure off.
These could include the 3" cube project and the interestingly dimensioned 3in x 1m pine challenge - BUT I don't see the need to specify pine and you will get more entries at 2ft rather than a metre, because a) more lathes will accommodate 2ft and b) 2ft is less intimidating and c) there is more scope with 2ft rather than the metre.

Just my thoughts.

it would be a dead heat wouldnt it !
so dealers perks ;) a cup and saucer it is or will be when i get home.
I will post the ruleses later but if anyones champing at the bit it will be the usual rules , any wood, any size etc.

If you go to "topics" in the woodturning forum, the second post down is a sticky and is called "New to Turning? Help, Information and Forum Challenges." The 8th on the list is:-

2013-competition-details-roundups-t67152.html

It took me a while to find it as well....

Could have had a full house of 18 entries as it was a draw and allowed either a cup & saucer or object from 3" cube. (Two separate results?)

All this talk about long things is great, but my lathe wasn't cheap and it only has a 16" bed (at1416vs) Why? Because I decided from the outset I don't want to turn cues and baseball bats and my workshop is not the size of an aircraft hanger. What's next on the list, a 20" bowl to see how big a blank we can throw at it?

Phil

Well first 2 attempts ended in disaster. Tried to go too thin and BANG! On attempt #3 now, and very happy with the saucer so far. The cup could be thinner, but do I tempt fate......?

Well, I tried to have time, but it looks as though I won't be entering either the August or the September challenge cos of work and now we're going on holiday. Packing the car as we speak.... Hope there are loads of luvverly entries and I'll really try for October.

Heather

Started making a cup and saucer and ended up with a goblet and dish.. Oh well maybe September will be more successful
