Don't know if this is of interest to anyone... but passing through Exeter I stopped at the surplus store on Marsh Barton industrial estate http://www.exetersurplus.com/ and noticed they had some old style carpenters bits. These are used items with the old style tapered square shank to fit the classic carpenters brace (but not of the early notched type). At a quick glance are three styles there - the standard auger bit, auger bits with a round eye type cutter and a very short pattern bit with a centre lead, a cutting spur and a cutting edge (sorry don't know the term for those).
All in I think there are about thirty there, varying from 3/16 to 3/4 (random, not sets) and listed at £1 each(I think).
Probably not worth a lot of traveling, but if you're in the are the area then worth a rummage....
