I bought this one last year at a boot sale for a few quid, but haven't used it, as I'm not sure what it's for?
It has an Ashley Isles sticker on the handle, so I'm assuming it is a turning tool of some description, maybe a captive ring tool???
Whatever it is, it looks a nightmare to sharpen. Any idea guys?
Thanks.

AI sell handles as well at shows so may be a homemade tool in an AI handle. Grinding looks a bit primitive for production tool, even an old one although I guess it could be successive years of abuse!

I'd guess captive ring also, normally flat and sharpened with a wipe across the top face with a stone of your prefered flavour but may need a bit of free hand for this one.

I guess key issue is does it work?

Hi

If this is for captive rings its very poorly ground - the grind is more akin to a 'vee' scraper but the cut away does suggest it would be used for captive rings, in which case the top surface would be more useful if it were flat.

I'd re-grind it into a tool of your choice.

Regards Mick

As I have no idea how to use a captive ring tool, let alone what now is probably a home made one, I think I'll leave well alone :)
