I want to alter a shape and print it out as a template for a bandsaw box, but my computer skills cant really be described as skills.

I want the standard yin yang shape, normally depicted inside a perfect circle, but I want it elongated and squashed.
Anyone up to the task?
i can give more exact descriptions and measurements if so.

Download GIMP

open your picture

select scale from the menu

and drag the appropriate handle to desired shape.

Nev, you lost me at GIMP.
I've only just worked out jpeg.

but its obviously easier than I thought.

I want the shapes to be horizontal, not vertical like in the above pics.
I want to be able to print a shape with a vertical height of 120 mm and a horizontal width of 170mm.

If someone could do that for me I would be very grateful

Here you go, you'll have to resize to suit your printing scaling, but the proportions are right.

Well, I've printed 3 copies and am now completely confused.
The first one as sent, measured 255 wide x 180 high.
I was pleased I managed to open it with paint and resized to 75% which gave me 153 wide x 108 high.
Tried again at 80% to hit the right size, and ended up with a SMALLER 120 x 88.
W.T.F.?

Did i say i was useless at puter stuff?
help (again) please, before i run out of ink and paper.

Feeling quite pleased now, I managed to work out what happened.
when I resized the original down to 75%, even though I didnt save anything, it stayed that size, so when i tried again to 80%, i got 80% of 75%.

Cleared it all down and tried again at 80% and got 160 x 115.

Thats close enough for tonight, tomorrow I can try it up against the block and see if i need it a tad larger again.
really grateful for all your help. i used to be able to do this stuff years ago when I had an XP system and photoshop software. this old vista laptop has only got Paint on it.

75% of 255 x 180 is 191.25 x 135
Your second attempt is smaller because yo have reduced the size of your alredy reduced image by 80%

You need to close the file without saving and then open it gain. Then resie it.

Notsure why your inital size reduction doesn't equate to 75% though?

GIMP is a great free tool but can be a tad daunting so ...
Heres a quick and simple online editor for possible future projects.

http://ipiccy.com

for example, to make your yin yang image...
instructions
1. Start editing now-
2. upload (choose file from your computer)
3. rotate
4. resize (untick constrain proportions) and drag slider under 'height'.
5. save (by clicking floppy disc symbol at top of page.)
