i was given a large box of old tools and there was a very nice saw in it made by robert kelly&sons its 26" long. i decided to have a little look on the internet for robert kelly tools out of curiosity and came across a 8" dovetail saw for $171. i was wondering if the saw i found would be worth anything? if anyone can help. i didn't know how to put pictures into the post so i made a folder on my website. angusbennettfurniture . co . uk then go onto the saw portfolio

Spot on Andy, not made by but for Kellys it was a well known tool store in both Liverpool and Manchester they often offered lower priced models of tools bearing there name made by a well known tool maker? But they would never tell you who the maker was.

Most of the larger saw manufactures made saws with their own branded medallions and Warranted Superior versions. It is believed that about 50% of the saws that you find with a Warranted Superior medallion were made by Disston. Disston had a very large portion of the market, but it was not a monopoly. Atkins, Bishop, Jennings, Woodrough & McParlin, and Simonds (1900-1926) were a few of the large saw manufacturers that made saws with some form of a Warranted Superior medallion with an eagle.

Just to clarify, Wizard, you are talking about American saws, aren't you.
I'm assuming the OP's saw is Sheffield made, as its medallion has a lion and a unicorn, not an eagle.

That said, I have compared a Sheffield made 'Spearior' saw side by side with a Disston D8 and they were very very similar, except (presumably) a shilling or two in the original price.

I had a 'Kelson' moulding plane at one time, no pictures I'm afraid, as it's gone on evilbay.

Cheerio,

Carl
