Pity about the weather but the views are tremendous

Hopefully going to get another visit when the weather is more conducive

Just the idea of abortions like the cucumber or what ever the hell that 'thing' has been called amd the thought of the shard or whatever the hell it's called makes me glad that I live in a small village near a globally appreciated ancient Cité, Carcassone, which is not going any higher than they built several hundred years back and in stone. The Cité will be here when the 'shard' has dropped into its own hole, but it could be a good place to live when London floods

I detest high rise carp (spelling) like Dubai and work on the principle that what goes up must come down?? These things are just 'The Kings New Cloths' and items of fashion as far as I am concerned. Someones high and they cost someone else dearly eventually..

Umm...I kind of take your point but personally thought that Carcassone was a bit too Walt-Disney-ish. Mind you, the fireworks on July 14th were mental

Rodger, I think that you will find that the Cité of Carcassonne predates Disney slightly? About a couple of thousand years in fact

As a matter of interest it was used as the model for Disneys Sleeping Beauty a fair while back. Robin Hood, Prince of thieves also had a bit filmed there as have a load of others films..

If you are going to visit the place in the summer it's far best to get in their at about 09.30 before the coaches arrive!

The fireworks have to be seen to be believed I agree! We don't normally like firework shows, but that one is special. Last year there were an estimated 200,000 people there and not the slightest hint of any problems, just a very festive attitude 8)

Very impressive looking, but rebuilt in the 1850's by an Architect who was not very concerned with authentic details?

Firstly my visit to the Shard was purely professional and linked to my work, that being said I absolutely enjoyed it and look forward to my next visit (hopefully better weather)

In relation to the above comments there are horses for courses if that’s the correct Phraseology i.e. I would not like to see the likes of the shard in areas like Carcassone or many, many areas in the UK. However I feel it is being constructed in exactly the right place for what it is, and the people and services it is meant to service.

More importantly there are a great number of architects, structural engineers and builders who feel they exist to push the boundaries of construction be it through design, technique, materials or inspiration. This has been the same since we moved out of caves and learnt to create our own surroundings.

Not having ever visited Carcassone (however a quick look on street view would suggest it is an extremely interesting place) I think I could say without fear of contradiction that throughout time there has been opposition to some of the buildings constructed there (and there possibly still is).

Whatever we do there will always be opponents to advancement, design and current fads, wasn't in Prince Charles who said of the proposed extension to the National Gallery that "what is proposed is like a monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved and elegant friend" and not only got the design changed but also coined the phrase "monstrous carbuncle" which has come to signify certain aspects architectural design which clash with its surrounds and why possibly the shard is not being built in Carcassone.

Finally where it not for the likes of people who commission and design such structures it could be argued that we all should be satisfied to have simple wooden structures in our homes to sit on, eat off, and store things in and be satisfied with our lot. Fortunately for the majority on this forum this is not the case and I am regularly in ore of the designs and inspirations of many here and long should it last.

In actual fact there have been and still are complaints about the way the reconstruction of the Cité was done by Viollet-le-Duc. He was a Northerner and replaced a lot of the tower roofs in the Northern style of steep angle black slate. But that is a hell of a lot better than no Cité which was what had almost happened. The almost flat terra cotta tiles are correct for this area.

I agree that it's good to have different opinions or it would be a very flat world.

There was a programme about building the Shard on the box.
Like it or love it - an incredible piece of Civil Engineering construction with several innovative techniques used.
Didn't realise that the public viewing floor is open to the elements!
