Hello all I'm after some advise, I was at a show and used the veratais bevel up jack plane,

I like it othe than the price tag,

I only own a £40 Stanley block plane,

Is there a cheaper plane that works as well,

I'm a site carpenter & window restorer, so shooting in sashes and hard wood doors,

I HATE ELETRIC PLANERS, I think there for first fix work only that's why I don't mind the big pay out,

Is the varatis woth the money?

I have a range of Veritas planes but bought them a few years back when prices were a lot cheaper? Quangsheng from Workshop Heaven are a good cheaper alternative.

+1 for Quangsheng at Workshop heaven, I have a few Clifton a d Lie Nielsen planes (all excellent!) and the Quangsheng range are just about as good for about a third of the price! Had the Quangsheng range been about when I bought my planes I could have saved hundreds!!

I just got a couple of qangsheng planes from workshop heaven as my first "new" planes and they are superb :)

If you decide to get any qangsheng planes, make sure you get them from workshop heaven. I remember reading somewhere that the tolerences the planes are made are specified to the supplier and therefore although the planes may look the same (I.e those sold by rutlands I believe) the quality may not be as good.

Record 5 1/2 - the standard issue for carpenters/joiners and probably the most versatile of all of them. Ebay from £20 to £50

Or Stanley No 6, I think those others are a bit of overkill for use on site.

Tilgear have a Brook No 7 on offer (£58) http://www.tilgear.info/products/5675/1 ... ter_plane/

Buy a faithful and put a Quangsheng blade in it! for site work would be ideal!

As per my review, Go for a stanley Premium 62 low angle jack. I think just as good as a LN and a LOT LOT cheaper.

If I was on site I would use one of my old Record planes I have some which are great and some that I would only use on a painted door. The quangshengs are very good if you buy one of the top spec ones (which are the ones Matthew and I stock) they are only available in 2" wide unless you go for the No 7 or 6 which is a beaut now that the handles in the right place. The Quangsheng are not as cheap as they were a couple of years ago but do give the top three plane makers a run for their money but never quite catch up. But I feel they do leave all the other cheaper makes I have seen looking pretty poor and lacking. The veritas low angle Jack is an excellent plane but I would rather keep mine in the workshop even at our discounted price.
