YOKB II - Kent Bash Gathering

Thanks. There seems to be some sort of cake-based theme going on, what's that about? Would it be worth signing up on TWH to get details like location, timings etc?

    TS200 Cutting Capacity

I cut the hole for the top guard into a slot to make it easy to put on/remove. Don't find it makes much difference TBH though, so I leave it off more often than not so I can see everything lining up properly. So long as your push stick/featherboard practices are sound you'll never come close...

Table Saw Blades - best brand?

I've got a Freud 40T blade in my TS200. Very happy with it, cuts everything I've asked it to very nicely, excellent finish on the edge and no tearout with a ZCI

YOKB II - Kent Bash Gathering

Sounds good to me, AFAIK that date is good for me too. Would it be OK to bring my Dad along, he's been woodworking much longer than me but doesn't really do the forum thing

Axminster MB9020 Benchtop Planer Thicknesser Mini Review

Well after a lot of go-around due to Axy's new computer system, a brand new replacement arrived the other day. Tables are flat and co-planar, I've not used it in anger yet but it seems like it's made good

    ash and black walnut

I would think that the quickest, simplest finish to apply now which will require the least prep and attention would be an oil finish. You'll be able to give it at least three applications, possibly more depending on when it needs to be wrapped. I'd just apply oil straight off, wouldn't seal it...

    Which dust extractor, £100 - £200?

Personally I'm not that convinced of the merits of auto-start. I have my Camvac plugged into a convenient socket wherever I'm working, so I use that to switch it on and off. With small tools like a ROS or hand held planer, I find they get switch on and off so much (especially the ROS) that...

Getting a good finish with poly varnish

So I've built a little table up in American white oak, and have got a tin of poly/alkyd gloss varnish that I'm trying to apply a decent finish with. I've applied four coats so far, the first coat was 50% thinned with white spirit, after than I've been applying it neat, as it's reasonably thin...

    Thinking about turning.

If you don't like the grinder and want to offload it yourself then I might be interested, I'm after one with a wider wheel.

Good choice, I'd still recommend picking up stuff like abrasives and sanding sealer if you don't already have them.

    Thinking about turning.

I suppose the nub of the question is what do you want to turn, given your space concerns I suspect that you might be better off with one of the smaller lathes like this one. That's got enough space over the bed to let you turn something thats around eight inches wide, and enough length to turn a...

Camvac extractor - single or twin motor???

Go for the twin motor, it's a lot cheaper than upgrading the whole setup later on

Axminster MB9020 Benchtop Planer Thicknesser Mini Review

Well I'm certainly eating those words today. After a frustrating time trying to plane some nice white oak I got the other day, careful measuring with my new straight edge has revealed that the outfeed table is not flat and the far end of the infeed table is about 1.5mm below the blade end. In...

I have one of those Stanley ones linked above - very impressed with it, five years later it's still going strong and the built in bit storage is very handy and actually works properly to boot

    Which dust extractor, £100 - £200?

http://www.yandles.co.uk/product.php/section//sn/CAMCGV336-1 That's what I have, the twin motor 2.5" inlet version. Personally I find the volume quite bearable with both motors switched on in my shop, and I haven't gotten round to ducting the exhausts yet which seriously reduces the noise...
