How does this work - did you just turn up and chop bits off, or do you have to get permission from someone? Ferdinand

    New and old stone

I think the entire wall has been maintained (not replaced), but over a longer period in stages - this looks like just the outer face. Ferdinand

    New and old stone

Purely for casual interest, this is a house stone wall being restored showing the new face and the erosion over the previous couple of hundred years. Ferdinand

Mystery Tour: Kitchen Cabinet Doors any use?

Can I ask advice on this. I don't know whether these are worth doing anything with. We have a lot of high quality cabinet doors, like this dark one (from our kitchen): or this light one: When you dismantle them you get a nicely rebated panel, which is planked but of good quality: and...

    Mystery Tour: First Success

Someone wants to give my hoop handles a home :-) Get ready. All dressed up and ready to go. My most reliable bit of kit of all - vintage 1910 - says it weighs nearly a Stone. Ouch. It's quite satisfying to save something from the bin, and I'm most grateful to the forum. The box is my...

Mystery Tour: Latest - Handles and Knobs (For sale?)

Wouldn't be looking forward to the tip :-(, especially if they decide to start charging - it already needs a special license befoer they'll take a small van. On the other hand, some of them are solid wood (pine), so can be bonfired. Ferdinand

Mystery Tour: Latest - Handles and Knobs (For sale?)

It continues. I have about 50 solid hoop handles: Nearly all are solid brass. A couple of metallic (alu?) Small are 125mm centres x 35mm projection. Large are 150mm centres x 50mm projection. These are not all in new condition really, and are a bit heavy to post (large = 125g). Anyone...

Mystery Tour: Victorian Iron ~15ft I-Beams?

That is what I thought, but challenges like that are very welcome indeed ! I think it definitely came from the same place at the same time on the same lorry, and that entrance has not been used since. And it wouldn't be on that pile unless I also can't find any work done in the demolished...

16"x8" oak beams from a Victorian Mill (Advice or

OK. Serious again. Realistically, I may be able to do something to recover this wood, but there's not a serious prospect of getting it indoors yet (no space, and it would be a 30-50 metre carry by hand with 10 years of undergrowth and a blocked gate in the way). I can put wire or yard-brush...

16"x8" oak beams from a Victorian Mill (Advice or

Thanks for that. That's ... um .. um .. £21 per cube (I'm learning :-) ), without the premium applied to larger or longer pieces. It is a number I've seen around for purhasing reclaimed pitch pine beams - albeit tidied up. I saw an "estimator" that slapped on 50% as soon as oak beams went over...
