    Stanley Yankee No. 41Y

Lee Valley make a hex adaptor for Yankee screwdrivers. Axminster sells it, and no doubt other shops.

Hand Tool Wish List 1399 Router Plane

That's interesting. I don't have to do this on the Record Routers I have. Both Record and Veritas blades have 3/8" square shafts and are the same height. I think the Stanley blades are a bit shorter, so do you invert the nut to ensure you can take a shallow cut on the first pass with a Stanley...

Hand Tool Wish List 1399 Router Plane

To answer the specific question about Veritas blades fitting in an old 071, I am using the Veritas blades in a Record 071 and 071½ and they are fine. As far as I can see the differences are: The Record blades just had a slot on one corner of the shaft for the adjusting wheel to fit in whilst...

    The Lidl plunge saw

Yes, my mistake. I was thinking of the Aldi Plunge saw that looks just like the Scheppach.

    The Lidl plunge saw

I managed to get a Parkside plunge/track saw from LIDL today, after missing out last year. 6 of them at the Welwyn Garden City branch when I dropped in at 10:00. £10 more this year but still looks a bargain at £69.99. There are no track clamps but as it is a rebadged Scheppach PL5 I could get a...

buying lee valley tools over here

You're not kidding. UPS charged me over £30 brokerage fee on my last order because I bought items from more than 5 different countries of origin. They told me up to 5 countries of origin are included in the standard fee but any more and they clobber you for the extra paperwork. So the knick...

    Axminster does it again

Maybe, but I think you have to look on a case-by-case basis. For instance, whilst it can be cheaper buying Veritas planes from Canada you can now buy WoodRiver planes in the UK at a price that means it isn't worth ordering direct from the USA, after VAT/duty/P&P is included. What really...

    Axminster does it again

I wish their prices were as superb. £1 = $1.7 at the moment but Axminster are charging more for Veritas planes in GB Pounds than Lee Valley are charging in US Dollars e.g. Axminster is selling the Veritas LAJ at £294.95 but it is $245 direct from Lee Valley. Might be down to some factors...

    Pocket knife - recommendations

Yes, I bought a Trevor Ablett Farmers Blade Buffalo Handle knife. I'm happy with it - nicely finished and ...... well, its just a penknife after all. I was seduced by the thought of having something hand-made in Sheffield by a traditional craftsman rather than buying the best knife in the world...

    Pocket knife - recommendations

You could go traditional and get one from the "Little Mester" Trevor Ablett.

    Trestle Style Bench

Some interesting ideas, but is there any point in having an opposing leg vice at each end? Perhaps the vice hardware was a BOGOF offer :)

    More eBay madness

Seems a 4 1/2 is worth even more if it is the sought after "Record chisel plane 4 1/2" - £64.53  . "Item condition: Seller refurbished" :) . Now, where's my hacksaw....

    Handsawing joints

Have you tried setting up a big mirror to watch your own saw action? You can then check that your hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder are in a straight line giving a steam engine piston type action, or spot any other non-textbook action.

    Cost of plywood

A slight thread hijack, but have you any tips on where I should be looking for flat plywood or MDF for a workbench top? As you say, the sheets you see in the sheds and builders merchants are pretty ghastly.

    router plane cutter

If you are in a hurry then the cutters for the Veritas Router are supposed to fit. Axminster sell them. They fitted my Record 71 OK and in Alf's review of the Veritas Router she says they fitted her Stanley. Probably get a much better quality cutter this way.

    Testing plane bodies.

Not all grey iron is as brittle as that No3 in the video. I came by a Record No7 with a crack from the mouth beginning to run up the side of the body – about 5 mm of the crack visible. Thinking it hadn’t much longer for this world I thought I would help it on its way with a club hammer. It...

    Plane auction - who's coming?

Difficult bidding on the net when the bid price button often bore little relationship to the current bid – I wasn’t going to press it when showing £200 and the bid in the room was £30, just in case several net bids jacked the price up in microseconds. As it was I overbid to win a compass plane...

    Axminster Price Hike

The Veritas web price changes do look odd. Although the Low Angle Jack dropped £233.86 to £220.95, the Bevel-Up Jointer dropped from £259.58 to £209.99 to be even cheaper than the Low Angle Jack. Bears no relationship to price differentials on the Lee Valley site. Perhaps Axminster are clearing...

    Replacement plane handle

On the Tool Shop Direct link I gave I can see a No 5 tote directly underneath the No 4. Or rather I can't see it, because the picture says "Image Coming Soon". I saw a tip for drilling a tote hole using a bench drill press. Drill short pilot holes where you want the tote hole to start and...

    Replacement plane handle

I don't know anything about them, but I came across some cheap replacements totes and other plane bits for Faithfull planes on Tool Shop Direct http://www.toolshopdirect.co.uk/products.php/store/5/c1/105/c2/439
