    advice please guys....re Erbauer

I've got one and found it OK, though it hasn't done a lot of work in my hands. My son (a joiner) borrowed it when he had his tools pinched - he gave it the thumbs-up and it got some pretty severe use whilst in his hands.

To grease or not to grease? - SDS drill bit

I just use ordinary grease on my DeWalt and have had it for about six years or more without problems. I've just had another look in the users manual to check and there's no mention of using any special grease. Jack. :)

    Isn't this a bit dodgy?

:( I've got a problem here - I was always told that I was found under a gooseberry bush!!!! Seriously though, I can't see why a web site needs to know my mother's name. OK for bank etc security, but the thought of Genes reunited or utube holding my personal details fills me with trepidation.

Does anyone have these Diamond stones? Are they any good?

Hi Darren, I've got both and though the less expensive ones may not be quite as good as DMT ones, they do the job and it's not as painful if my son "borrows" them and then leaves them on a job somewhere.

    New magnet regulations.

I make a few fridge magnets from odd bits and pieces of wood left over from other projects. The type of thing that the little people can buy at craft fairs for 10p. Dolphins, whales, cats and that sort of thing. But it's been brought to my notice that I now have to attach a warning that these...

    Yet another newbie requiring advice

I don't wish to be a damp squib Mark, but if you find a market and people who are prepared to pay for your time in doing intricate inside sawing, could you please let us all know! Even selling at cost price for materials, it's damned hard work and don't forget you will be competing against the...

    Inlay bandings

I've used the banding from CS with success and you should have no trouble fitting it to the diameter that you mention. The method that I use is to apply the banding to the groove as you mentioned and then bind it with masking tape until the glue has set. Fine sanding or wire wool afterwards and...

    Health & Safety - Risk Assessments - Help !

Mike wrote Valid point there Mike. When we first started filling them in years ago, I thought as did most people, that they were a waste of time. My guess is that there are one or two people alive today, or at least walking around with all of their limbs who would not have been prior to risk...

    Health & Safety - Risk Assessments - Help !

Chris, I'll PM you a standard risk assessment form that you can download. I did dozens of the things when I worked in Local Gov. The form looks intimidating when you first see it, but there are explanatory notes at the end. If you get a problem, get in touch and I'll try to help. Once you've...

    Handsaw Maker Information

The 1857 directory for Sheffield lists S. Biggin & sons. Saw, scythe &co makers, Portland Street, Sheffield. Portland Street in Sheffield is still in existence and is just off the A61 trunk road. This area had many small manufacturing works in the mid to late 1800s. Later today, I'll try to...

    When you get older...

Paul wrote Didn't the old fashioned barbers used to set fire to them using a lighted taper? Another use for one of those mini blowlamp things?

    When you get older...

:( Spot on Bruce. The other thing that really drives me nuts is other peoples cats (here we go). I've always objected to having to clear up their mess from my garden, but as the bones have seized up and I find it an even bigger problem. So if I have dog and am required to keep it under control...

Can i remove the guard from a table saw?

Buy a bandsaw. :D Not a good idea to remove guards, they are there for a purpose - the purpose being to save you going to A & E with your fingers in a plastic bag being kept cool by a packet of frozen peas!

    Sorby Tool Rest System

Yes Chris, I have some of the components and it's OK but the fact that the toolrest is some way off the work can be a bit disconcerting. Really, it's a compromise from buying a number of different tool rests - and like most compromises - it's not ideal !! Jack

Momo is very sad right now

:( This may sound strange, but many years ago, I looked after the hives in a garden where I was the head gardener. An old bee keeper (in his 90's) once told me that if a bee keeper dies, someone should go and explain this to the bees in the hive, otherwise they will abandon the hive. Yes, I know...

    Tools for segment turning?

Steve, I've been doing segmented turning for ages and I can't quite understand why a thickness sander is an essential piece of equipment. The segments are cut on either my band saw or scroll saw then glued up. Perhaps I'm missing something here - and if I am, someone will no doubt enlighten me.

    plane maker?

I concur with Philly. W. Dibb was making planes early 1800s and in fact, they made quite a lot of shipwright tools. Which may seems strange being in York and a long way from the sea, but in fact there was quite a lot of boat building taking place in York and nearby Selby and Goole during this...
