    Tools for segment turning?

In segmented work a lot depends on the type of construction, wether you are making segmented or one piece rings, strips or other shapes, flat parallel faces or right angle joints. In all cases the following is true. Faces must be flat and joints should have good mating faces. this can be...

    Tools for segment turning?

HI Steve. I have produced a number of segmented bowls and platters and agree with the other posts, a thickness sander is not required. A good table saw with either a sliding table/sled or pull through facility, plus a SHARP 40 to 80 toothed blade should be your first requirement. A...

    Critique Etiquette

I have been in France so missed the start this debate. On reflection not a bad thing, so a few observations: 1. I am still a novice in the turning game so offering my work for critique is I think unfair to both me and the reviewers. Posting photos and getting comments on technique and general...

    finishing teak

I have made several pieces of teak furniture for use inside and in the garden. Finishing with danish of other oils darkens the wood. does anybody know of a suitable finishing product that will not darken teak. Dave C ( davol)

    carba-tec lathe

Hi. From the the information you give: 240v 180 w, using ohms law should give a fuse rating of 0.75 amps. Or using the other info: 1/5 hp = 149.14w. This would give a fuse rating of 0.62 amps I do not know the any details of lathe in question, so I am not sure that the fuse you refere to is...

    (S)teak sandwich

using up scraps to make a (S)teak sandwich, a bit thick and the teak is on the outside. I am beginning to get the hang of turning lark. (until I see some of the other offerings on this forum). [URL=http://freeshare.us][/URL Davol

    K10 chuck is stuck

Hi Reg. I would beware of Mark's leather washer idea, a chuck needs to screw up to a positive reference. Any flex or play induced by a soft washer could well be reflected in your finished turning. Dave C (davol)

    Waterproofing vases

I am not sure that any coating would be 100% water tight, either immediately or over a period of time. Fibre-glass might be an answer but I think the best bet is look for some plastic or glass bottles/containers, ignore the contents unless drinkable. You should be able to find something to fit...

    work in progress

Last time I posted on the forum Paul J asked for some work in progress. I am not sure this is strictly a segment project but the same principles apply. The bowl did not turn out as intended but more of that as we go through the photos. http://m1.freeshare.us/view/?152fs762191.jpg Main body elm)...

    Reminder...

Just a thanks to Graham and all at M.A.C, timber. In spite of a very wet Sunday, attendance seamed to be quite good. I was impressed at two extremes,Graham with his delicate miniature turning to a young lady (I don't know her name) dealing with a 700mm dia X 700mm chunk of timber on a mammoth...

    Sharpening survey

I can sharpen drills and other tools freehand. However when I first started turning the need for sharpening gouges and other turning tools made it clear to me, that in order to produce a clean repeatable edge some form of jig was required. After looking at various sharpening systems ( I know it...

    two into one

Hi all. non answers to the questions I am afraid. The timbers used are, teak/beech for the segmented section. I am not sure of the lid and base. The blanks came to me undefined, My best guess would be either elm or chestnut but I am not sure. If anyone can identify it from the photo's I for...

    two into one

I am not sure about the proportions as a single piece but it was more about getting some practise than anything else. The photo of the inside is for Chas. Yes I am getting better, not very deep or thin walled yet,but it did not come off the chuck and NO dig'ins. Found that tools blunted...

    bowl blunder

I told you I just starting!!!!! it should have ended up something like this. http://m1.freeshare.us/view/?141fs169872.jpg BUT http://m1.freeshare.us/view/?141fs378026.jpg The rim was not glued to the main bowl body face to face, but (why I don't know) I turned a spigot/tennon and recess. When...
