Last time I posted on the forum Paul J asked for some work in progress.
I am not sure this is strictly a segment project but the same principles apply. The bowl did not turn out as intended but more of that as we go through the photos.

Main body elm) with side piece. (beech) The important thing here is that the main body is square and the mating faces are flat.

Base positioned on main body position not critical but again faces must be flat.
http://m1.freeshare.us/view/?152fs762378.jpg
All glued up with face plate ring attached
http://m1.freeshare.us/view/?152fs762448.jpg
Mounted on lathe ready to go ( count your fingers)
http://m1.freeshare.us/view/?152fs762598.jpg
External rough shaping, Trying to shape either side of the center line of the side pieces in order to maintain the maximin dia of the bowl along that line.
http://m1.freeshare.us/view/?152fs764994.jpg
Turned around and started internal hollowing.
http://m1.freeshare.us/view/?152fs762925.jpg
Finished bowl (dia 170mm x 90mm)
Problems:
The beech base had a split in it, so it turned out a lot thinner than planned.
I also planned to hollow out until I cut into the side pieces but I hit a small
Knot with a crack extending to the rim, so I chickened out at the point you see in the last photo.
Paul I am not sure if this what you meant by WIP, but for what it's worth there it is.
