How best to waterproof this please?

I'm going to make the good lady a wall hung planter for herbs. It'll be wood so how best to waterproof it? Multi coats of varnish or some sort of pond liner type membrane?

What to do with a split?

Hoping to make a small table from an Oak slice. It has now dried but has also, as expected, split. What can I do with this split, to hide it or incorporate it into the table please? fallout 3 morality

    Drying an Oak slice

In the last gales a large Oak came down and is now being dismantled. I have been given a lovely "slice" to make a small coffee table from but how can I dry and seal it to prevent it from cracking please??

    Home made steady.

Having recently bought my Proxxon Micromot DB 250 MICRO Woodturning Lathe along with a head and tailstock chuck, there were only a couple of things I needed, a nice set of woodturning tools and possibly a steady. Well Santa was very helpful and I got the tools but no steady! However, I couldn't...

    Would it handle it?

Stupid question? I have an old Silverline planer and am wondering if the blades would cope with some soft aluminium. I do not have a mill of any sort and I have to remove about 2 - 3mm from the 12mm wide face of a piece of 6mm X 12mm flat bar and was thinking that going fractions of a mm at a...

    Mini wood working lathe.

I bought this little lathe as I am building a wooden clock and needed something to turn a few small pieces. It has done a great job, look at the pictures, and works really well. Having been given a bigger lathe for Christmas I no longer need this little fellah, so it has to go. Although the...

Just bought this - any good?

Been looking for some time now for a small lathe for my clock making project and have finally decided on the Proxxon Micromot DB 250 MICRO Woodturning Lathe with head and tail chucks. Got the lot for £200 so well pleased, I think. Anybody got one, used one? Your thoughts would be appreciated...

    Mini lathe help please!

There seem to be hundreds out there, many similar but can't find one that will do everything I want. I am building a wooden clock, and will probably build more as I'm thoroughly enjoying it. My main problem is turning and accurately centre drilling some of the smaller parts. Oh and also, as a...

    Wobbly pedestal drill.

Very annoying, my (not expensive) Clarke CDP5DD pedestal drill has developed a very slight wobble as soon as I start to lower the quill to drill. I've disassembled the quill and the spindle bearings are tight so the problem is slight slackness between the quill and the casing. Talking to Clarke...

    Lubricating a Scroll Saw.

Good morning members. I've had my Katsu scroll saw for some weeks now and in the manual, under "maintenance" it says to "lubricate the bearings of the slide rollers periodically" but doesn't show where these are or how to go about this procedure. I presume that most of these saws are similar so...

    Making wooden tubes.

In my current wooden clock project I need to make some wooden tubing but am finding it almost impossible to put the centre hole through. I need to put a 6mm hole through the centre of some 12mm OD hard wood dowel, up to a maximum of 120mm long. The other tubes are only 70mm long but even these...

    Would like a bigger chuck!

I have a very small lathe (due to lack of funds) which only has a 0.6 - 6mm chuck with a B10 taper fit. I have looked all over for one with a biger capacity but haven't had any luck. Does anyone know if there is such a thing out there, Ideally out to 12mm but with the same B10 taper fit?? Thanks

    Tic Toc!

Never thought I'd start something like this but very glad I did! Saw a wooden clock on line and thought, I wonder....... So downloaded some plans from that master clock designer and maker Brian Law http://www.woodenclocks.co.uk and started the build. Of course I also had to buy a scroll saw and...

    Useless blade adapters.

My scroll saw came with useless, non pin end blade clamping devices. Basically the blade goes through a small hole in the device and then you have to try to clamp it between two allen screws. Obviously, when you turn one of the screws to tighten them, the blade twists and even snaps. I have...

    A small woodworking lathe.

I am building a wooden clock and need to turn quite a few small items for it. I don't have a lathe so am looking to buy one. As a 79yo pensioner I don't have much spare cash so have been looking around and have found this one from Germany. Has anybody had one of these, it certainly looks good...

    Scrolling circles.

I need to cut out a large, 300mm diameter circle and thought the best way to get it accurate was to mount a (somewhat basic) jig on the scroll saw table onto which I could attach the wood to be cut. I have made a small hole at the circle centre point and secured it at this point to the jig with...

    Morse tapers.

I have a small woodworking lathe (and I mean small) and I want to put a slightly larger chuck on it as the one on there only goes to 6mm. The spindle from the motor is (I believe) a Morse Taper being just 18mm long and 10mm diameter at the big end and 9.2mm diameter at the small, outer end. Is...

    Files for scroll saws

Firstly, hi everybody. Just joined the forum as I am new to the art of woodwork, sort of, having built many yachts and planes over my many years! I am having a go at building a wooden clock, fancied the challenge, so have bought a scroll saw, which I love but am finding it quite hard to cut out...
